Well if I recall correctly, in the original story, as far as your character thought originally he was a hero for his town. Going into the portal to fight demons and sacrifice himself/herself, so they don't attack your village through the portal. It was only when he discovered the factory that he realized this was no place for heroes. So having the intro describe us as "valliant heroes" fits the narrative we would be fed before being sent to our deaths.

Or one character is being sent in this year, and the rest of our characters have been established around the portal in previous years.
