The world is corrupted. It all started when Japan bombed the United States on July 4th, 1944, at the height of World War 2. The bomb was made of some experimental, unidentified material. The bomb itself wasn't especially deadly, but what came from it was. Some sort of purple corrupting ooze spread rapidly throughout the United States, then the continent of North America, then the ocean. It traveled across the ocean to other lands, corrupting and twisting the land and people wherever it arrived. The only place that was safe was Japan, as they had somehow created a barrier via sigils that blocked out not only the corruption, but people as well. Japan was the last remaining government in the world, as even their allies succumbed to the corruption spread they had inflicted upon the world. People that could, fled to Japan for safety. The sigils were drawn on stone with chalk, and could not be drawn on the same side of that stone again. They needed to be constantly managed, because if a single sigil wore out even slightly, the barrier would fail entirely. Luckily, there were no shortage of people in Japan willing to dedicate their time to keeping the barrier up, and the corruption out.
This lasted five years, before one vengeance seeking saboteur found the factory where the corrupting bomb was made. Where the corrupting agent, whatever it was, was stored. It was blown up, and the massive influx of freed corruption spread throughout Japan rapidly like a tidal wave of purple water. The barrier not only kept the corruption out, but it kept the people in. By the time people at the barrier found out about the corruption inside and lowered the barrier to flee, there was no time to flee. No one escaped Japan on August 27th, 1949. Entering Japan now is suicide. Japan is now the source of greatest corruption in the land, home almost entirely to what we call "Smarts". What are Smarts, you may ask? Well, to get into that, let's discuss what the corruption did first.
Wherever the corruption touches, that is corrupted. Anything that makes skin contact with that spot, is corrupted. The grass is purple and forever in a state of semi-dead, barely over the toes height. Trees twisted and died in ways that made them look like they'd attack you as well. After the explosion, the corruption reached even the sky. A purple fog filled the sky, blocking out most of the light in the sky. Oddly enough, light still comes through, and in consistent amounts as well. The world is trapped in a Dusk-to-Dawn state, where it is impossible to tell what time, day, or year it is. The best we have is people who have dedicated their entire lives to timing the days, and keeping it cataloged. By their best guesses, the world is somewhere between August and December of 2017. The corruption has created an indeterminable array of monstrosities with unpredictable forms and powers. No two Corrupted are truly the same. They do have two classifications, though.
The Corrupted: If there's a body left when someone dies, this is what they become. The transformation is instant. The moment a person dies, corrupted or not, they will transform into a creature of random appearance, shape and powers. The Corrupted do not have intelligence, though. They are mindless, feral, unpredictable, and care about nothing but killing the living. They take orders from the Smarts, if a Smart is able to communicate and the Corrupted can hear. Do not underestimate a Corrupted, because that Corrupted likely made the same mistake you're about to make.
Smarts: What do you get when a human comes into contact with corruption? A Smart, short for "Intelligent Corruption". At least, that's what people call them to differentiate them from the regular Corrupted. They work just like the corrupted, except for a few key differences. Their intelligence and desires are still intact, though they are usually amped up and twisted in a violent manner. A lust for a person will likely have the suffix of murder added on, for example. If they can, a Smart will instead kidnap a person and make them come in contact with pure corruption, to make them another Smart. If there's too many humans to kidnap them all, though, a Smart is more than wiling to raze an entire village for some Corrupted to command. They make plans. They ambush, cut off corridors, work together, and maximize the potential of their unpredictable forms. A Smart is predictable in one way and one way only: They all have a desire to return home. No matter how well hidden your town is, a single person leaving town and getting turned into a Smart will result in the Corrupted knowing everything about your town. One person slipping up could be the end of entire towns of people, and as such, nowhere was ever truly safe in corrupted land.
At the same time, people living in corrupted lands sometimes developed strange abilities of their own. Children, especially, were susceptible to these natural mutations. Enhanced natural ability, powers, minor physical mutations, that sort of thing. At first it was thought that the children were born corrupted and they needed to be killed, but scientists soon discovered that this was only partially right. The children had a small amount of corruption in them. The corruption was a small part of their DNA, even if they were completely normal children. The world was quickly becoming what was once considered high fantasy, as even magical items could be found in places of strong corruption. The corruption itself seemed to be the source of these fantasy-like results, and no one but the officials of Japan might've known why.
We begin our story in what used to be the European country known as Georgia. This is one of the few lands where the number of Corrupted is manageable, and children usually manage to survive to their teenage years. As with any other land, though, disease is rampant. Disease might be the one thing one common than the Corrupted in this world. Many traditions and practices have died off in 73 years of corruption, such as shaking hands and any other physical form of friendship. Vaccines have been created by scientists, one of the most valuable jobs in this world, to combat corruption. A person can come in contact with anything ranging from corrupted grass to the Corrupted themselves without being turned, but contact with pure corruption will convert a person to a Smart none the less. Dying still turns you into a Corrupted regardless, and no one can figure out how to avoid it. Most villages have designated hunters, people who are sent out of the village to find supplies for it. These people are trusted in their ability to not get caught, as everyone knows the repercussions of a hunter being converted to a Smart. Regardless, many hunters do not make it back, no matter their innate ability. The random nature of the Corrupted means it is impossible to plan against them, and what works great against one may not work at all on another.
Rumor has it, a young woman fell from the sky in a nearby village, and a hunter of the town has taken her in. She does not know how this world works, nor does she understand fully the horrible state the world is in. One thing that sticks out about these rumors, is that since she appeared, patches of green grass have appeared where she resides. Land that can be used to grow food. If these rumors hold true, this is the place to be. The hunter is supposedly incredibly powerful, having protected this village single-handedly for a few years now, and on top of that there might be someone there that can stop the corruption. And so, you are traveling there to see for yourself. On the road, you found a few other brave travelers looking for answers, and that is where our story begins.
--Rules-- 1. The obvious. No Godmodding, meta-gaming, controlling other people's characters without their permission, randomly killing other characters, that sorta thing. 2. Some information will be provided to scientist characters, in private, that only they will know. Characters that are not scientists will not know these things, so do not try to make your character know just because "I heard some scientists talking about it". If you want to do that, ask me first and I might let it happen. 3. If you do something stupid that will get your character killed, they will die. Touching pure corruption will effectively be the death of your character for you, and you do not get to control the Smart unless I let you. Do not expect ahead of time for me to allow you to. 4. Magic weapons and stuff are totally allowed, just describe what they do very specifically. If it does something beyond what you described it to do, it might just break after it does it. 5. Give your character whatever powers or mutations you want, just don't go overboard. I don't have a rule against stuff like time stopping, but something that powerful will have some specific and significant limits to it. No exclusions. NEW ADDITION 6. Scientists get exclusive info, but Hunters get A FREE MAGIC ITEM out of three I'll be providing. It will be via PM, just like the info for scientists. It will likely have been a parting gift from your previous village, or an item you found during your travels to this nearby village.
