The game follows 4 usual protagonists, though 2 are just supporting characters, and 1 outsider. The two normal protags are paranormal investigators and they each have an assistant. The Outsider and the Investigators are PCs.(edited)

The plot revolves around the usual, a failed ritual, this time it's where a woman and man have to be wed and sacrificed to keep bad shit from happening, I couldn't make specific reasons as to why it needs to be that for the ritual but it needs to be that for story, but it fucks up somehow, doesn't matter.

The Investigators are wanting to find out more about this story because it's what they do, and the Outsider(Realized I should be calling them Foreigner, oh well.) is there to track down a murderer who he knows is fanatical about completing the ritual so he can become the husband of the ghost or whatever.

So, as you go through the place you find a bunch of notes detailing a bunch of crap, the usual stuff, people preparing for the ritual, concerns, sabotage plans, yadda yadda. As you go through the game each character besides the Outsider has a Ghost specific to them leading them in attempts to help finish the ritual.

The Player goes through a week in a nearby village as they go through their investigation, all of the PCs sharing notes they found and made, when in the village segment you can view scenes when playing as different characters giving more insight into the characters.

The more notes you collect, the more the Investigators and Assistants become obsessed with the ritual. Unlike the other PC's The Outsider will say something after putting a note away after collecting it, generally dismissing it off hand as he's disinterested at the moment due to being in a dangerous situation.

And that's where the Multiple ending are going to be largely coming from.

The Ghosts interacting with the Main Characters will be able to possess them if you collect to many notes as they're being drawn into the ritual. This includes the Assistants as occasionally the Assistants will join with in investigations which will be given information from their own Ghosts.

Through the Notes it's stated the Husband and Wife must be of strong will, so what it's intended to trick the player into thinking is that the Outsider will be sacrificed to become the Ghost's Proper Husband as the Outsider is a person of strong will searching out a murderer across countries for months.

The Outsider will have also been interacting with a Ghost, which is later figured out to be the Wife, she helps him, but unlike the others, she never appears in view of the other characters except to occasionally watch them, but she'll very quickly vanish when noticed.(edited)

At the end of the Game, everyone who's possessed shows up to the ritual, and the Murderer is also there. The Outsider is the final person to arrive, The Murderer wanting him there to witness as he fulfills his role and takes his place as the husband.

Upon going through the ritual The Outsider watches as the Murderer start sacrificing himself and through the ritual, The Outsider needs to battle each Ghost possessing each Main Character.

At the end of the battle against the Possession Ghosts The Wife comes down and appears to be the final Boss, but a cutscene starts.(edited)

The Ritual is not what the Murderer thought it was as he was not actually knowledgeable of the ritual specifics and The Wife has been leading him through the motions. The Wife true goal was to end the curse by closing the gate letting the spirits loose.

The Wife doesn't intend to vanish however, along with the Possession Ghosts they need to be battled to loosen their attachment to the gate. The Ritual is too late for the Murderer to stop as he's bleeding out and unable to move.

The Husband comes from the Murderer, indicating that she had a Husband, so another cannot be substituted. The Husband was residing in the Murderer slightly messing with his mind as to make him not question the Wife too much about the specifics of The Ritual.

The Ghosts, when their attachment to the gate is weakened, can be attached to a target of strong will, so the Ghosts intend to attach their existence to the Spirit of the Outsider. So when The Ritual that The Wife was enacting is complete, the Ghosts will be able to travel see more of the world with the Outsider.

The Final Battle is a fight against The Couple, which they will throw themselves fully into, though will not allow The Outsider to lose. Though the Best ending needs you to complete the fight in less than 7 minutes as whatever the Murderer was doing is complete, his death not being required.

The Best Ending has The Outsider leaving with the Murderer in cuffs and turning him into the police, getting proper closure with his story and having the Ghosts joining him as he spends a few months traveling the country. Iunno how the Investigators story would go as they were characters I was less interested in as they were more tools to get the story to the end in my mind.
