Frost stirred and stirred as it was memoreis of...that night
(Written by Naru)
The night wasn’t any different than normal. Their small, rag tag group was seated around the table, throwing jokes and jabs and simply enjoying life. Jin and Shade had heard word of unnatural storms and tornados kicking up for no reason, a tell-tale sign of another Velkar.
“It’d totally round out the team, Peri, we should go check it out, it’s only a state away,” Jin said.
“I don’t think we should split up, it’s dangerous,” Peridot argued, setting her burger down.
“But it could be some scared kid, c’mon, you can’t let a kid stay out there panicking,” Shade fired back. Peridot frowned, and the boys shared a glance. They knew that Peridot would never leave someone in trouble. Frost pat her shoulder.
“Why don’t I go? I’m newer here, and I don’t stand out too much,” he offered. Peridot looked over at him, the debate raging within her clear on her face. “No wings.”
“Yeah, but that means you can’t just fly into the air to get away. I don’t know,” Peridot said.
“Listen, you brought Frost in, and he’s been a dope addition. Let us go check it out, it’ll be fine!” Jin insisted. Peridot began to reply, then the world exploded. Peridot was thrown backwards through the wall as several bullets fired into the wreckage of their home. Jin was screaming for Peridot, and someone somewhere was sobbing. As Frost ran through the house, searching for his friends, his magic failed him. His friends were dead or dying, and in his panic, he couldn’t connect with his ice. In the face of monstrous flames, his ice had no power.
There was blood sizzling on the floor, and Shade was slumped on the table, dead. He tried to find Jin, to follow the screams, but they cut off with a gurgling gunshot. “No, no, no,” he repeated, trying to find someone, anyone. Frost assumed the worst when Peridot didn’t kill the fire, and, finding the bodies of his friends, knew he needed to run. They’d found them, the hunters. He needed to get out. He charged for his bike, leaping on. He spared the burning house one last glance, and closed his eyes, a tear slipping forth as he sped off.
Finally, Frost's eyes opened as he felt his stomach...realizing there was no wound.
