In a superhuman society, being a hero would be a job. Super villains are more common than regular villains. Maybe a criminal organization has sprung up, and they need to form a team to deal with this threat?

I like the "Team up" angle, but it might have some problems. We would all need to be on for big events to happen, which could mean one or two of us being away could slow us down by a lot. Then again that might not be a problem, I'm not sure.
What are we teaming up against? Some kind of world-threatening event? Why aren't other superheros reacting to this one?
I suppose this comes down to "How rare are superpeople?" Which correlates directly to "How much is the world being threatened by supervillains" and "How many superheros are against them?"

Present time.
Plus I'm also debating on whether or not to have it in the Fan Fiction section because I like our heroes meeting up with the heroes of Marvel and DC. Our stories are our own, but it'd be cool to be in their universes or a combined universe of both of them.
MMk so a multiverse. Which in turn could actually help with the story as something could threaten them and hence our team is called upon to go and kick ass. Alas I must depart for now however.

Essentially what I have for the custom idea is for everyone to make their characters and we'll go from there, since the Character sheet I have in my mind looks like this

Well we probably need a setting of some sort to make our characters. I've already got two solid character ideas I was discussing with Scott yesterday (Or was it this morning? I'm not sure.) I just need a setting for their stories.

Okay well...here's what I got
Great Powers:
In this world there are being with great power gifted with the abilities that defy mortal men. Pargons of virtue who protect the world, and foul denizens of darkness who aim to destroy it.
These beings are known as the Super. The Superhero and the Supervillain. They are hidden in the world and do good or ill depending on their nature.
